Biography

I am the consultant psychiatrist and team leader of an integrated Community Mental Health Team in Oxfordshire.

I am part of the Social Psychiatry Group at the Oxford University Department of Psychiatry for a number of years. My research interests include issues of coercion and compulsion in community psychiatry, the organisation of psychiatric services, and the social functioning of those with severe mental health problems. I am currently involved in two studies examining so-called informal and formal coercion in large samples of people under the care of mental health services. I am one of the investigators on the OCTET randomised controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of Community Treatment Orders.

My other interests include managing a fledgling scheme to assist refugee doctors from overseas to work in the NHS while receiving support and training to try to enable them to return to medicine.

I am also keen to promote integration of clinical care and research and am a member of the NHS Trust’s research and development committee.

Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Mental health NHS Foundation Trust is a World Health Organisation (WHO) demonstration site for community psychiatry and I work with Tom Burns in arranging visits from, and regular communication with, psychiatrists from around the world.
